The rough endoplasmic reticulum is located around the nucleus and consists of a network of membranous tubules and sacs. Proteins synthesized on the ribosomes the surface collect in the rough endoplasmic reticulum for transport throughout the cell. Through the electron microscope, the rough endoplasmic reticulum appears rough because ribosomes stud the cytoplasmic surface membrane.
