The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is a continuation of the outer nuclear membrane. It is used for the synthesis of lipids, the metabolism of carbohydrates, and for detoxification of drugs and poisons. Under an electron microscope, the smooth endoplasmic reticulum appears smooth because it does not appear as studded by ribosomes as the rough endoplasmic reticulum.
