Peroxysomes are composed of membrane-bound pockets of oxidative enzymes. In plant cells, their function is to convert fatty acids to sugar an assist chloroplasts in photorespiration. In animal cells, peroxysomes protect the cell from its own production of toxic hydrogen peroxide. Under an electron microscope, peroxysomes appear as circular objects with a dark core.
